(BEDFORD) - Two teens were injured after their reckless driving on U.S. 50 East caused a crash early Wednesday morning.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, officers were called to the crash at 12:10 a.m.
Police say both drivers, 18-year-old Keenan Gates and 19-year-old Breston Sowders of Valloina were both traveling east on U.S. 50 at a high-rate of speed. When Gates passed two motorists on the right, other motorists were concerned about the teens' driving and pulled off the roadway.
Gates told police his floor mat had got stuck around the accelerator and he hit his brakes and that is when his 1995 Ford F-150 turned into Sowders' 1999 General Motor pickup causing both vehicles to spin out of control. Gates' truck spun around and went up onto the bridge and guard rails, sliding to a stop, straddling the rails. Sowders truck went left of the center line and crashed into the bridge rail.
Officers say the driving behavior of both teens caused the accidents.
Gates was cited for unsafe lane movements and improper passing of vehicles. Sowders was cited for operating a vehicle without insurance and false and fictitious registration.
Both drivers suffered head contusions and bruises and were treated at the scene. Both refused to go to the hospital.
