(MITCHELL) - Groundhog Road Farms LLC, operated by the Miller family of Heltonville, was named the 2013 Conservation Farm of the Year by the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The Times-Mail reports that the presentation was made by LCSWCD Supervisor Mike Scherschel Monday night during the district's annual meeting at Spring Mill Inn. Sam and Cecil Miller accepted the award on behalf of the family.
The Millers began working with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and LCSWCD in 2006. Since that time, they have implemented numerous conservation practices, including livestock access control, watering facility development, spring development, heavy use pad installation, forage and biomass plantings, conservation tillage, prescribed grazing practices and conservation crop rotation.
The family also operates a maple syrup operation on the farm.
During the meeting Mike Spreen was re-elected as board supervisor and Mike Scherschel was reappointed to the board. Adam Roberts was recognized for having the Lawrence County 4-H Fair 2013 Grand Champion 4-H Soil and Water conservation project. Mitchell Junior High School Teacher Jordan Key was honored as the Conservation Teacher of the Year. He teaches a landscaping class at the school.
Also recognized were the 2013 Soil and Water Conservation poster contest winners.
Evan Smith was introduced as the new National Resource Conservation Service district conservationist for Lawrence County. He began his duties in October.
Former LCSWCD District Coordinator Marsha Ralston was honored for her 23 years of service. She retired in January.
