Last updated on Friday, February 21, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The winner of the 40th Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee is Jathan Howe, an 8th grader at Shawswick Middle School.

1340 AM WBIW hosted the event at Shafer Auditorium.

Howe won after Madison Ayers, miss spelled the word sergeant. Howe then spelled the word underprivileged correctly - claiming the title.

Howe competed against seven other contestants.

Ayers, a sixth grader from St Vincent de Paul School, placed second.

Third place was a four way tie, between, Christan Anderson, a sixth grader of Oolitic Middle School, Hannah Henderson, a fifth grader and the winner of the elementary competition, from Lincoln Elementary School, Mia Nicol, a sixth grader from Mitchell Junior High School, and Gavin Carter, an eighth grader, with the Lawrence County Christian Home Educators.

Officials held a tie-breaker spell-off between those contestants.

Both Henderson and Nicol went out the first round. Henderson misspelled anschluss and Nicol misspelled excursus. Then in the next round, Anderson misspelled the word farouche. That left Carter, who took the third place title after spelling vacuole correctly.

Another contestant, who went out on the first round, was Vonya Girgis, a seventh grader, at Bedford Middle School.

Howe received a trophy, t-shirt, certificate, a mint coin set from Bedford Federal Savings bank and a pizza party for his homeroom. He will now represent Lawrence County at The Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 15 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

This will be the second time Howe will represent Lawrence County at Cardinal Stadium. He won the Lawrence County title in 2011.

The second and third place winners also received a certificate, t-shirt and trophy.

All the other contestants received a certificate and t-shirt.
