(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford has agreed to do nearly $50,000 in work to refurbish part of the building behind Harp Commons.
The Bedford Board of Works chose firms to install drywall, interior doors, an electrical system and heating and air conditioning equipment on the north side of the building, where showers, dressing rooms, restrooms and storage areas will be located.
The south side will be devoted to a stage. City crews have been doing a lot of the work at the building, but Plan Director Dan Kirk asked for sealed quotes from companies to do some specific tasks.
The heating and air conditioning equipment will be done by Pipe Dreams Inc. of Bedford, doing the drywall will be Built Rite of Bedford and the interior doors will be done by Tri-County Builders, of Bedford. The electrical work will be done by Steve Lumpe of Bedford.
The city received a $50,000 grant in 2012 from the Indiana Office of Tourism Development to renovate the downtown park. The grant had to be matched with $50,000 in local money.
The park ground was sinking. Repairs required digging, filling, re-seeding with grass and other work.
The building, formerly owned by Jim Jenkins, on the west side of the park will hold a stage area and restrooms.
The city acquired it with $40,000 from the city's general funds and John Hawkins of Kovert Hawkins Architects drew plans for the project free, and city crews gutted the building to prepare it for its new use. The work is to be finished by the end of June.
