(BEDFORD) - Indiana University Health Bedford Cancer Center is providing 50 free digital mammograms screenings for women between 40 and 65 years old in Lawrence and Orange County who are uninsured and low-income eligible.
The screenings are being paid for through a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust, Indiana University Health Bedford Cancer Center will provide 50 free digital mammography screenings in 2014.
"Receiving this grant allows us to reach out to women who may not otherwise be able to get a screening mammogram," said Georgetta Vaught, clinical director of IU Health Bedford Cancer Center. "Screening mammograms are one of the best tools we have to detect cancer in its earliest stages. When cancer is detected early, treatment can begin sooner while the tumor is smaller and has often not spread to other areas."

Funding for Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust grants are made possible through the sales of the Indiana breast cancer awareness license plate. Since the plate became available in 2002, more than $2.5 million has been distributed.
