Mitchell Woman Dies In U.S. 50 West Crash

Last updated on Thursday, March 6, 2014

(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell woman died after she rolled her car on U.S. 50 West, North of Blue Springs Cavern Road.

According to a Lawrence County police report, 35-year-old Jane Gillespie, of 760 Bryantsville Road, was traveling west on U.S. 50 and was exiting a curve when her 2001 Honda Civic went off the right shoulder and down a rip rap embankment sliding sideways.

The car then overturned onto the driver's side and hit a tree. Police say the car traveled more than 146 feet before it crashed into the tree.

Gillespie was pronounced dead at the scene. She suffered severe head injuries.

Bedford Firefighters and volunteer firefighters from Marion Township spent 30 minutes freeing Gillespie from the wreckage. Police say the roof of the car was completely smashed down nearly touching the seat area from front to back. Gillespie was wearing a seatbelt.

Police say there was no skid or brake marks at the scene and are not sure why Gillespie lost control of her car. Police also found no paint transfer indicating no other vehicle was involved. Police say the left rear tire was blown, but believe that happened when the car hit the rip rat embankment.
