(MITCHELL) -Did you know nursery rhymes are a great tool to prepare your child to learn how to read?
Michelle Zehr, youth engagement specialist at Mitchell community library says studies have been done to prove that early exposure to nursery rhymes actually makes learning to read easier for children.
Why is this so?
Nursery rhymes help develop auditory, memory and hearing skills. They also help to build vocabulary.
One study found that the average elementary student in 1945 had a vocabulary of 10,000 words whereas today that number is down to 2,500 words.
The repetitive nature of nursery rhymes allow children to constantly listen and become familiar with a variety of sounds.
