(GREENE CO.) - Last Tuesday, Greene County Humane Society staff received a welcome shock when they learned that more than $1,000 had been raised to benefit their organization.
The Greene County Daily World reports that two 8th grade girls from Eastern Greene Middle School came up with the plan for the dodgeball tournament that generated the funds.
Madison Deckard and Taylor Rollins were determined to make the event a success.
The final tally is not in yet, but the students raised at least $1,300 through entry fees for the teams, tickets sales, concessions, and team photos.
A check will be presented to Humane Society Director Rene Abram on March 31.
Twenty-eight teams participated, which were made up of 146 students and seven staff members. Twenty-five of the school's 31 middle school teachers attended to either participate in some capacity or show support for the players. The game was played with large nerf balls to keep kids from being hurt.
Classmates and teachers learned that Jayce Mitchell, a sixth grader with muscular dystrophy who played in the dodgeball tournament, was planning to participate in the MDA Muscle Walk at Indiana State Fairgrounds this Saturday, and kids and staff members collected over $350 to present to him on Friday.
