(PEKIN) - A verbal dispute Friday night ended with one man being shot and another being arrested.
Washington County Sheriff's Department Capt. Roger Newlon says officers were called to Franklin School Road after John Dukes, of State Road 66, was shot.
Dukes suffered a gunshot wound under his right arm.
Officers arrested Norman Knight on felony charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.
According to police the incident happened after Dukes picked up his daughter from Knight for visitation. Knight is in a relationship with the child's mother.
Dukes picked up the child without incident. He then left the home with his daughter, but pulled off the road about a quarter mile from the home on Franklin School Road. It is unclear why Dukes stopped along the roadway.
A short time later, Knight came through, saw Dukes pulled off the road and stopped. At that point, the two men exchanged words and allegedly Knight pulled out a .22 pistol and shot Dukes.
Dukes yelled that he'd been shot and told his daughter, whom police say is 11 or 12-years-old, to call 911. Knight then sped from the scene. Police say, Knight had a passenger with him, but that person was dropped off after the shooting.
A medical helicopter was called to the scene and transported Dukes to the University of Louisville Hospital. Police say Dukes is in stable condition and underwent surgery to remove the bullet.
Officers then began a search for Knight. They staked out the area of Knight's home, and just after 10 p.m. they arrested Knight when he returned to his home
Knight was arrested without incident and taken to the Washington County Detention Center.
