(VALLONIA) - A 16-year-old Vallonia girl escaped serious injury after her car struck a pole and caught fire Monday morning along South State Road 135.
Shayla Williams, a student at Brownstown Central High School, was treated at the scene by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services. She was then taken by her parents to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour to be evaluated.
The one-vehicle crash was reported at 8:05 a.m. on State Road 135, just north of Vallonia. According to a Jackson County Sheriff's Department report, Williams was driving a Pontiac Solstice north on Ind 135 when the vehicle left the road, traveled about 75 feet and crashed into a Duke Energy utility police.
Police say the engine compartment bore the brunt of the impact which caused the car to erupt in flames. Williams was able to escape the burning car.
Brownstown Town Marshal Tom Hanner assisted at the scene.
