(BEDFORD) - Bedford Parks Director Mike Mitchell is retiring. He announced his plans Tuesday afternoon at the Park Board meeting.
Mitchell told the board he will miss the parks, but most of all he will miss his staff. Board President Tim Deckard praised Mitchell for keeping morale high and facilities in excellent shape during trying economic times.
Board member Butch Fish recalled receiving a telephone call from Mitchell nearly 35 years ago with his plans to develop Murray Forest Park. From that sports complex to the sleigh rides with Santa and for every playground swing, basketball court, park bench and all the programs Mitchell implemented Fish gave thanks.
Mayor Shawna Girgis will appoint Mitchell's replacement. She has chatted with Mitchell about the department's future and plans to talk with Deckard before filling the position.
