(HOWARD TOWNSHIP) - The Blue River Fire District and the Blue River Fire Department are hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, to showcase the new firehouse.
A ribboncutting ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. The new station is located at 5279 South Beck's Mill Road, the site of the Howard Township community building.
It is more centrally located then the old station, which is too small to house all the department's trucks and equipment.
The property was give to the fire district by the township community board with the stipulation that it be used to benefit the community. It provides not only a place to store the department's trucks and equipment but also space for community events, with a meeting room, small kitchen and office.
The Leader Democrat reports the total project cost is $614,045, which includes various fees and the cost of an environmental review. The district was awarded a $400,000 Community Focus Fund grant and also received $12,281 in matching funds channeled through the Washington County Community Foundation. A $211,764 loan, financed by MidSouthern Savings Bank, covered the remaining costs. The loan is being paid back through the fire department's cumulative fund.
The Blue River Fire District contracts with the Blue River Fire Department for fire protection services for residents of Howard Township.
