(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners voted Tuesday to demolish the old courthouse annex, just north of the jail on I Street.
Woodridge Homes Inc's will take down the deteriorating building for $124,700. The building has not been used since 2004, when a building inspection revealed the presence of toxic mold.
Bob Bridge of the Times Mail reports that the biggest issue during the meeting was the poor condition of county roads. Marcus Spiker, who resides in The Woods and Leatherwood Circle residents Larry Brown and Hurbert Jenkins were among those that addressed the commissioners with their concerns.
The commissioners conceded road conditions were poor, but explained they had to spend what little resources are available on heavily traveled paths. Commissioner Chris May says the county has approximately 700 miles of county roads that need addressed, but only about 3 percent of those roads will be resurfaced.
County Highway Superintendent Dave Holmes and his three foremen will survey the roadways and determine the greatest areas of concerns. Holmes added it will take most of the summer to fill pot holes.
Spiker asked the commissioners to at least provide a plan of action for when the roads in his neighborhood will be addressed.
In other business:
Chris Walls of 39 Degrees North provided the commissioners with a chart comparing usage fees charged by other counties for special services. Spreen said they would study the information and propose a rate schedule at the next meeting.
The commissioners granted Bob Grewe of Bernardin Lochmueller & Associates permission to access 39 Degrees North during the next two weeks. Bernardin Lochmueller is assisting Mitchell on a new comprehensive plan.
Sheriff Sam Craig reported the jail population is 157. 31 of the inmates are women and 17 are Department of Correction inmates.
