(OOLITIC) - Members of the Town of Oolitic Festival Parade Committee have named Frank Turner grand marshal of the Oolitic Festival Parade.
Committee members went to Turner's home Tuesday afternoon to notify him of their decision. Turner is a World War II veteran and was surprised by the announcement.
Committee Member Jody Manning says that Turner was selected because the festival and parade would not be possible without those that served and fought for our freedom.
"I've always got to watch the parade," he said, "and, now, I get to ride." Jody responded to him that parades in our towns are possible due to those who served and fought for our freedom.
Mr. Turner served in WWII and landed at Omaha Beach just six days following D Day. He survived battles and skirmishes across France, Belgium and Germany. As a proud patriot, Turner is one of the oldest remaining WWII veterans living in Oolitic and will lead the parade on June 14th.
The Oolitic Festival Parade is on Flag Day and will celebrate the red, white and blue.
As the committee left Turner's home, he offered a prayer, blessing the committee for their kindness.
The Oolitic Festival Parade will be on Flag Day, June 14. The day of celebration will offer something for all ages with some surprise guests and, of course, a very thankful Grand Marshall representing our Greatest Generation.
