(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man was arrested after police found him intoxicated and shooting a rifle in and near a farmer’s barn early this morning.
42-year-old Richard Simmerman was arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm and dangerous possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person.
According to Sheriff Sam Craig, officers were called to a home in the 900 block of U.S. 50 West at 10:56 p.m. after the property owner reported there was a man in his barn shooting a firearm. The caller then told police the man then appeared outside the barn and was still firing the gun.
Officers went to a home in the area and Simmerson answered the door with the rifle in his hand.
"Officers told him to put the rifle down and he complied," Craig says.
Simmerman told police he was hunting in the area and had fired some shots near the barn.
