(AVOCA) - A homeless man was arrested after Lawrence County Police received several calls reporting an erratic driver traveling north on Ind. 37.
"Callers were reporting the driver was driving 45 miles per hour and then would speed up to 75 miles per hour and then slow back down," says Sheriff Sam Craig. "The vehicle was stopped on Ind. 37 at the Avoca turnoff."
When officers talked to the driver, 55-year-old Carl Lawrence, they noticed a green leafy substance in the corner of his mouth. When Lawrence opened his mouth he was chewing on marijuana. Officer took Lawrence to the jail where, he failed a blood alcohol test and a drug recognition expert evaluation.
During the testing process Lawrence became combative and uncooperative with officers and jail officials.
At the jail officers, also found Lawrence was in possession of a schedule III controlled substance and found that Lawrence had dumped several pills in the back seat of the police car.
Lawrence was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment, OWI under the influence of a controlled substance, and two counts of resisting arrest.
