(UNDATED) - If you are going to be doing some backyard digging and planting in this gorgeous spring weather, there are some things you need to keep in mind before you start.
Chuck Muller is the Public Relations director for Indiana 8-1-1. He says it's very important to call 8-1-1 two days before you plan on doing any yard work that involves digging at any depth. That's because some underground facilities are buried just inches below the surface.
So, a quick call to 8-1-1 can save you money in the long run.
Besides, for example, if you don't call first and cut a gas line, you could be fined up to $10,000, so take advantage of 8-1-1.
Muller says it's a free service that is available to the public 24/7. All you have to do, he says, is dial them up, tell them what you're planning on doing, and 8-1-1 members will come out to your home and put various colored flags around to mark the approximate location of any underground facilities.
Muller says that includes everyone from planting a tree or garden to putting in a new mailbox.
