(WASHINGTON) - On Tuesday morning Washington Police were called to Griffith Elementary after school officials confiscated an unloaded BB gun from the backpack of a fifth-grade student.
Police Chief Mike Healy says the situation was handled quickly and well.
According to Healy a classroom teacher contacted the principal immediately after learning about the gun and the backpack was searched and the weapon confiscated. Police were contacted and the student was immediately sent home with his mother. Healy says at no time were students or staff in danger.
Washington Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Dan Roach says parents were parents were alerted Tuesday night about the situation via the School Messenger Phone Alert system.
The incident is under investigation. School and police are not commenting on what kind of punishment the child will face.
Roach also spent much of Wednesday visiting the corporation buildings and reviewing the protocol.
