(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HAND) has announced that the Blooming Neighborhood Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Farmers’ Market.
The Blooming Neighborhood Celebration event is open to all neighborhood residents. Neighborhoods will be encouraged to host their own information table to showcase their neighborhood.
To register for a space, please contact Program Manager Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov or 349.3505. The event is free and open to the public.
This will be the 14th year that Bloomington neighborhoods have been gathering together to share in the camaraderie of spirit, work and success of local neighborhoods.
The theme for 2014 is "Celebrating our Success." The event will provide a venue for the participants to feature what is happening in their neighborhood through several methods:
HAND has created a listing for each neighborhood of all the HAND grants they have been awarded since 1998. Each neighborhood will receive this list at the Blooming Neighborhoods Celebration so they can share their projects and how they made them work. The neighborhood can be as creative as they wish with the list, i.e., adding other projects they have initiated.
Again this year we are encouraging neighborhoods to submit entries for the "My Neighborhood Pot Luck Idea!" HAND will add your ideas to the book we furnished last year, which is a collection of "recipes" that share the special ingredients of making a neighborhood project work . The template for this project is available on the Blooming Neighborhoods Celebration web site. Neighborhoods are encouraged to enter as many ideas as they would like. Though it is still early, it is never too soon to start thinking about what ideas will be best to share with fellow Bloomingtonians. Please contact Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov or 349.3505 to request the form, or visit the website above.
The program "Art Right Up Your Alley" was initiated to add to the celebration during the month of June. HAND is partnering with Bloomington Arts Commission to issue a Call to Artists to submit artworks for consideration for an exhibit at City Hall Atrium for the month of June. This is a wonderful opportunity for local artists to showcase their work featuring the neighborhoods of Bloomington - their architecture, environment, people and activities. For more information, visit the City of Bloomington website or contact Miah Michaelsen at michaelm@bloomington.in.gov.
The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is working with social network "Nextdoor" to institute a new program to promote better communication between the Bloomington Police Department and Bloomington neighborhoods. A BPD Officer will be at the Blooming Neighborhood Celebration to talk to neighborhoods about this new program.
"Cardboard Neighborhood" will be a participatory art project led by members from Lincoln Street Boys and Girls Club. The structures they build will be exhibited at the Blooming Neighborhood Celebration in the Plaza outside of City Hall. Visitors will be encouraged to engage with the Cardboard Neighborhood to add their own touch. The Cardboard Neighborhood will symbolize the importance of each individual's efforts in the community to enhance quality of lives within all neighborhoods.
