(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence Head Girls Basketball Coach Damon Bailey, who guided the Lady Stars to a 27-1 record and state crown, is headed to become the top assistant coach at Butler University assisting former BNL Coach Kurt Godlevske.
Godlevske led BNL to an undefeated season and a state title in 2012-13.
Bailey says he couldn't resist the opportunity. That means BNL Athletic director Jeff Callahan is hunting for a new head coach to lead the Lady Stars.
Bailey's oldest daughter, Alexa, has also committed to Butler and will play there starting in 2015-16.
It wasn't an easy decision for Bailey who is walking away from a two-time state championship team that has a strong nucleus to be successful again. Alexa will be a senior and his youngest daughter, Loren, has two more years to play and his son Brayton is coming up.
But Bailey says the move will benefit his family in the long run. BNL will not lose the Bailey talent, the family plans to stay in Bedford and Damon will travel back and forth to Butler.
Callahan says the Lady Star's varsity assistant coach, Jeff Allen, seems a likely successor to take Bailey's spot as head coach and Bailey is supporting that choice.
