(BEDFORD) - More than 1 million Hoosiers don’t have access to enough food to sustain a healthy life.
More than 355,000 of them are children. Last month, in honor of National Nutrition Month, the IU Health hospitals in south central Indiana teamed up to host a food drive benefitting local food banks.
Rachel Lott, Community Outreach manager at IU Health Bedford says For the last seven years, the hospital has partnered with the Hoosier Hills Food Bank to host a drive throughout the month of March to help feed those in need in our community.
This year, through the efforts of employees gathered nearly six tons of food and donated it to local food banks.
Donations from IU Health Bedford went to the LIFE Pantry, while IU Health Bloomington donations went to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, IU Health Paoli helped the Paoli Schools Backpack Program, and IU Health Morgan partnered with the Morgan County Food Pantry Red Barn.
"Our annual food drive is always a great event because it allows anyone to be involved and it truly makes a difference to others in our community," Lott says.
The LIFE Pantry accepts donations throughout the year from individuals and organizations. To learn more, visit lifeindiana.org.
