(UNDATED) - Today is Election Day with voters headed to the poles to decide whose names should appear on the ballot for the general election in November.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. 1340 AM WBIW 1340, Super Oldies 105.5 WQRK and Z102 WPHZ (102.5) will keep listeners posted with election results once they come in.
Many races are uncontested, but two county races have attracted much attention.
Lawrence County Clerk Myron Rainey says the election could stir a strong voter turnout because of the contested Sheriff's race.
Six people have entered the race: Republicans Mike Branham, Neil Hayes and Sam Shaw, and Democrats Bill Allen, Darin S. Kinser and Roland Stockton. Current Sheriff Sam Craig has served two consecutive terms and, by state law, cannot run again.
Republicans also have contested races for the Lawrence County Council in Districts 1 and 2, and for the Lawrence County Commissioner seat in District 1. Running for County Commissioner District 1 are Republicans Rodney Fish, Chris May and David Bud Nicholson.
For County Council District 1 is Keith Dillman and Scott Smith and for County Council District 2 is Raymond Briggs and Michael Wright.
Several people also have filed for the 9th Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Todd Young. On the Republican ballot are Mark Jones and Kathy Lowe Heil, and on the Democratic ballot are Bill Bailey, James McClure Jr., J.S. Miller and William Joseph Thomas.
One polling site has changed. According to Lawrence County Clerk Myron Rainey, voters in Perry Township that voted at the Life Tabernacle Church, will now vote at the Springville Feeder Auction on State Road 54.
One other polling site has been changed since the most recent election, which was in the fall of 2012. Voters in the Shawswick 4 precinct, who previously voted at First Wesleyan Church, now will vote at the Bedford Baptist Temple, at 2417 N St.
Rainey reminds voters that knowing and reporting to the proper precinct is critical to being allowed to cast ballots.
Rainey urges those who have questions about where they are to vote to call his office at 277-2036. Although other offices in the Lawrence County Courthouse will be closed but the clerk's office will be open for election-related purposes.
Rainey reminds voters they must present a driver's license or an identification card when reporting to the polls. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be open today and can assist voters who need to obtain an identification card or renew driver's licenses.
If you need a ride to the poles contact the TASC Bus between at 275-1633 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
