(BROMER) - If the weather is good a female red tail hawk will be reunited with her mate in Bromer.
The bird suffered injuries on State Road 337 near Brome in March. She was found by Mike Baker, who found the hawk and went home and called the Indiana Raptor Center in Nashville and was instructed how to pick up the bird.
A couple of hours later Baker met with officials from the center in Bedford.
Edmunds says many birds are injured because of irresponsible human behavior. She believes the hawk was hit by a vehicle.
"People throw their trash out of the car," Edmunds said. "It might be an empty bag, but there's the smell of food." The smell attracts mice, and a bird spots a mouse on the road. "All the raptor is trying to do is get his lunch."
The Indiana Raptor Center reports 73 percent of the birds brought to the facility have been affected "by the activities of man," with 70 percent of them having been struck by vehicles.
The hawk Baker found, estimated to be six to 10 years old, had suffered a concussion.
Baker did the right thing in calling the raptor center, and Edmunds said anyone else who finds an injured raptor also could call the center at (812) 988-8990 or should call the local sheriff's department. Time is of the essence in making sure that appropriate care is administered as quickly as possible. As for worries anyone might have about having a raptor in his possession, Edmunds said the law includes a 24-hour Good Samaritan clause.
