(SPENCER) - The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close County Line Road at the Monroe-Owen County line on the north side of State Road 46, on or after Monday, May 12.
This closure may continue through the third week of June.
Motorists traveling between Gosport and S.R. 46 are advised to detour from County Line Road onto Mt. Carmel Road, west to Concord Road, then south to S.R. 46.
Milestone, the state's contractor for INDOT's $2.8 million sight-distance project on S.R. 46, has been clearing difficult rock formations from the north side of the east-west highway for the past month. It requires the closure to remove County Line Road's north approach to S.R. 46 and to excavate for ditches and drainage pipes, pour several hundred feet of concrete curbs and prepare subgrade and place lifts of asphalt pavement for the new westbound lane.
The state is lowering high lands and raising valleys to improve driver safety along the east-west highway between Spencer and Bloomington. When completed this summer, S.R. 46 will accommodate 12-foot lanes with 8-foot shoulders--with a much improved sight-distance profile.
