(LOOGOOTEE) - The Loogootee School Board voted Tuesday night to hire Joan Keller as their new superintendent.
She will replace Laura Mattingly Hannum who is currently serving an interim superintendent and replaced former superintendent Larry Weitkamp. He resigned. Board president Scott Hall declined to say if Weitkamp just abruptly left his position or whether he was forced out by the board. The board had voted to extend Weitkamp's contracts just two months before he was replaced.
Beginning in July, Loogootee taxpayers will spend more than $200,000 to pay two school superintendents.
Former Superintendent Larry Weitkamp, under the terms of his contract, will be paid $105, 822 through June 2015. Laura Mattingly Hannum, former elementary principal, was named interim superintendent and the board will pay her $77,604.
Hall say Weitkamp will be paid through the end of his contract, using vacation and unused sick days. He worked for the school corporation for more than 40 years.
In other business:
Loogootee Chorus Teacher Steve Sherohman was asked to submit his resignation.
More than 20 students, parents and fellow teachers protested the request. The board members Nancy Summers and Shawn Howell voted to accept it Sherohman's resignation, however Larry Craney, Scott Hall and Tim Bradley voted to not accept it so Sherohman will stay.
