(MITCHELL) - Mitchell High School’s baseball team coach Jordan Key has resigned. The school board accepted his resignation Monday night.
Key was suspended with pay after an incident during the game against Orleans on May 1. According to witnesses Key was yelling at 17-year-old Zach See and had chest-bumped the teen both in the dugout and on the field. See is a sophomore and starting player.
Cheryl See says the incident has been upsetting to the family and spoke to school officials after the game.
At Monday's meeting, Marci Burton, the mother of a high school player and a junior high school player, asked if Key would continue to be involved with the junior high group. Superintendent Steve Phillips told her he would not. Parents, including the Sees, are happy Key is not returning.
Key did not attend Monday's meeting, but told the Times-Mail the incident was a "regrettable" moment in an otherwise positive season. He claims the incident is not the reason he resigned.
Key will continue to teach seventh-grade math at Mitchell Junior High School.
