(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County recorder Jim Fielder, 58, was found dead at his home Saturday evening.
Coroner Nicole Meyer says Fielder hadn't been feeling well Saturday, and when friends checked, they found him dead. Foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday afternoon in Terre Haute.
Fielder spent a total of 35 years serving in county government, serving as clerk for four non-consecutive terms and recorder for three non-consecutive terms, including the current one. Fielder filed for re-election this year.
Some of his accomplishments as recorder include beginning process to accept credit cards for recorder's fees, new equipment for the office processes and establishing a county archival space.
In an email to the Herald Times announcing his bid for re-election, Fielder wrote the only thing that would prevent him from continuing his life of service was his declining health.
"I feel truly blessed that the public has entrusted me to take care of their records and business over these years," he wrote. "I look forward to continuing my work with and for the public if they will allow me to serve one more term and look forward to completing the projects we currently have going. It's truly a blessing to work with and for the public. There's always room for improvement and we'll spend a large amount of the next 4 years doing just that."
