(BROWNSTOWN) - An officer wounded in a shootout with an 18-year-old prison parolee barred from possessing a firearm has been released from the hospital.
Rick Meyer, a Jackson County sheriff's deputy, planned to return to the scene of the incident Friday to talk with investigators about his role.
Meyer was shot twice -- once in each shoulder -- while investigating a report of suspicious people on State Road 39 just south of Tampico. That report was received at 7:06 p.m. Thursday, and the caller told dispatch there were what appeared to be suspicious juveniles walking along the highway with a trash bag and a gasoline can.
Isiah Rogers, 18, of Brownstown, who is accused of shooting Meyer was on parole after serving less than one year in prison on a sexual assault conviction and was barred from possessing a firearm.
Roger who was shot by return fire from Officer Meyer, has been out of prison for less than three months, according to public records.
A second man involved in the incident Thursday, 21-year-old Alexandrew L. Mullikin, of Vernon, was wanted on a Jennings Circuit Court warrant on charges of auto theft and false informing, according to the Jennings County Prosecutor's Office. He was arrested on that warrant and remained in the Jackson County Jail on Friday night.
A review panel of five people will investigate the shooting.
Sheriff Michael Carothers says the review board will include officers with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, a firearms instructor from another police agency and the county prosecutor. He is unsure when the panel will meet to review the incident.
