(SEYMOUR) - Late Thursday afternoon, one person was killed and two others suffered minor injuries in a crash on U.S. 31 as a result of a traffic back up.
According to Sergeant Mark Helms, just shortly after 5 p.m. traffic southbound on I-65 at Seymour had been re-routed due to problems on a bridge on I-65 south of Seymour.
Southbound traffic was being detoured off I-65 southbound to U.S. 31. On U.S. 31 a southbound semi was stopped in traffic just north of County Road 50 North. A 2008 Toyota Corolla driven by 58-year-old Thomas Coomer, of Austin was on CR 50N waiting to turn left and go north on U.S. 31. As southbound traffic was stopped the semi driver motioned for Coomer to pull out. Coomer pulled out in front of the semi and continued into the northbound lane of U.S. 31 and was struck broadside by a northbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander van driven by 60-year-old Timothy Brock, of Seymour.
Coomer's wife, 55-year-old Debra Coomer, the front seat passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thomas Coomer and Brock both suffered minor injuries and were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour to be treated.
Sgt. Helms was assisted at the scene by Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Vernon Township Fire Department, and the Jackson County Coroner's Office.
