(COLUMBUS) - Columbus police have arrested a Seymour man after an attempted robbery of the PNC Bank, 1830 25th St.
29-year-old Kelly L. Hughes is accused of attempted robbery, a Class C felony, after he was arrested about noon Thursday. He is being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond.
Columbus Police Chief Jason Maddix says that at 10:41 a.m., the Bartholomew County Emergency Operations Center received a call of an attempted robbery at the bank. He says that officers from the Columbus Police Department arrived on the scene in under one minute. Despite the quick response, the suspect was able to escape the scene after fleeing without taking any money. Maddix says that a perimeter was established near the bank, but an initial search for the suspect was unsuccessful.
Shortly before noon, a call of a suspicious person matching the robbery suspect's description was received near 11th and Washington streets. Officers responded and detained 29-year-old Kelly L. Hughes, of Seymour. He was transported to the Columbus Police Department for questioning. Hughes was later arrested and charged with attempted robbery, a class C felony.
No weapon was mentioned or displayed during the robbery attempt and no one was injured.
Police are asking for anyone with additional information to contact Columbus Police Det. Sgt. Tom Foust at 812-376-2600.
