(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Council voted to hire another staff member at the county detention center.
Sheriff Sam Craig explained that the state jail inspector examination analysis recommended the county hire six more staff members to operate the facility.
Craig was hoping for approval of two new jailers.
He says the possibility of hiring additional personnel could be discussed during 2015 budget hearings.
Craig noted slightly more than $20,000 was available in a surplus equipment and he planned to supplement that with $11,000 from the commissary fund.
Councilman Jim Edwards, speaking on behalf of the salary committee, recommended hiring only one jailer now by utilizing those available funds.
Craig also reported the jail's part-time nurse was departing and a security officer was planning to retire. The council unanimously approved filling both vacancies.
