(SPRINGVILLE) - Dedicated effort has paid off for Springville Elementary School students and staff members, who have learned the school is the winner of the Blue’s Kick-It challenge “Take Pride in Yourself” issued earlier in the school year by the Indianapolis Colts.
As the winning Indiana school, Springville will welcome two Indianapolis Colts players, six cheerleaders and Colts mascot Blue, who will visit the school later this month for a celebration. They will bring the team's Super Bowl trophy along for the students to see.
Springville was up against about 30 other Indiana schools in its push to win the challenge. The winning school was determined on the basis of materials submitted as an official entry in the contest. A scrapbook and video were submitted as Springville's entry.
Laura Charles, Springville's principal, learned the good news in a telephone call Friday from Janelle Christie, a representative of the Blue's Kick-It challenge.
An exact date for the celebration has not been determined. The event is strictly for students and staff members and is not open to the public.
The "Take Pride in Yourself" campaign was sponsored by H.H. Gregg appliances and electronics with involvement by the Colts.
An emphasis placed on discouraging bullying was one of the three components in Springville's Take Pride challenge. Each goal outlined in the challenge began appropriately with the word "kick."
Committee members, Donna Anderson, Jamie Banks, Chelsea Crane, Jamie Day and Kathy Hammel, worked diligently to assure all portions of the challenge were covered, measurable, creative and infused with the "Kick It" values." Those values are kicking bullies out of school, kicking it up in the classroom (promoting academic success) and kicking it for 60 daily (urging students to get at least 60 minutes of exercise every day).
Charles also said Brandy Richey, the school's technical assistant, helped immensely by assembling the pieces needed for the DVD. Copies of the DVD are available for sale with the proceeds to be used for offsetting the cost of providing all students with a T-shirt that Dana Martin, a Springville parent will design. Permission has been granted for a Colts logo to be used on the shirts.
