(BEDFORD) - Nearly 150 students received scholarships to continue their education Thursday night.
The Bedford North Lawrence Scholarship Foundation presented 319 scholarships to 148 members of the Bedford North Lawrence High School Class of 2014. In addition, it presented one continuing scholarship to a college student. In all, the stipends total $421,568.
The money comes from a variety of sources. The foundation, which was started in 1967, invests the assets it receives to maintain the value of the original gift. Scholarships are provided according to the wishes of donors.
The foundation reports that, as of 2013, it has awarded $4.7 million to graduating seniors.
Among other things, the foundation's activities include:
Furthering educational opportunities for graduates and faculty members of North Lawrence Community Schools.
Developing and promoting interest in education.
Stimulating good teaching practices.
David Jacobs is president of the foundation's board of directors. Other officers include Vice President Hillard Lewis, Secretary Jennie Edwards, Treasurer Ray Housel and Parliamentarian William J. Tatom.
