Amateur Radio Demonstrations This Weekend At French Lick Airport

Last updated on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

(FRENCH LICK) - Anyone interested in learning more about amateur radio operations is invited to attend field day activities planned this weekend at the French Lick Airport.

The event kicks off Saturday at 2 p.m. and will continue until 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Orange County Amateur Radio Club and the Orange County Amateur Radio Emergency Service will join together to provide demonstrations during the 24-hour period.

The public is encouraged to experience ham radio's latest capabilities and learn how anyone can get a Federal Communications Commission license.

The event is planned in conjunction with Amateur Radio Week.

"The loss of the capability to communicate critical information in an emergency situation is the fastest way to turn the incident into a total disaster," said Larry Jones. American Radio Relay League section emergency coordinator for the Indiana section. "From the meteor explosion in Russia and Japanese earthquake/tsunamis to tornadoes in Missouri, amateur radio ensured impeccably dependable communication networks in the first crucial hours of the incident.

"Due to the fact that amateur radio operators and their equipment do not rely on the systems of organized infrastructure such as cell towers, Internet or power grids, they can deploy and set up relatively simple and provide reliable communications that perform when nothing is accessible. Ham radio needs only the air between us to communicate."
