(INDIANAPOLIS) - In the nightcap of the 2014 IHSAA Softball State Finals, Bloomington South used a combination of opportunistic hitting and efficient defense to take home the first softball state championship in the school’s history.
Hamilton Southeastern struck first, as junior Ashley Rohr drove in senior Natalie Heiniger with an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Bloomington South didn't flinch, as they responded immediately in the bottom half of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Addie Benham delivered with a bases clearing double, which put the Panthers up 3-1. They added two more runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth.
Bloomington South ace Olivia White, a junior, pitched seven strong innings, giving up only one earned run while striking out eight. She was backed by a defense that made smart, athletic plays throughout the night, limiting the Royals offense to only two runs on eight hits.
Hamilton Southeastern and head coach David Cook finished the season 23-11 following the school's third appearance in the softball state championship (2007, 2010, 2014). Head coach Meg Montgomery's Panthers finished 21-8, capturing the school's first ever softball state title.
