(BEDFORD) - The Bedford North Lawrence High School band program was awarded the All-Music Award by the Indiana State School Music Association.
This is the first time the program has won the award, according to BNL Band Director Jimmie Jones. To receive the award, bands must receive gold ratings in marching band, concert band, jazz band and have students qualify for the state solo and ensemble contest.
The BNL Marching Stars were awarded a gold rating and advanced to the ISSMA Scholastic State Finals. In January, some students were awarded gold ratings at the solo and ensemble competition at Bloomington North High School.
These students also advanced to the solo and ensemble state finals. The students who won individual awards were Stephen Quillen - trumpet solo, Atalie Klumpp - clarinet solo, Summer Lake - flute solo and Nick Johnson - snare drum solo.
Gold ratings were also given to percussion ensemble - Nick Johnson, Britain Patton, Payton Cook, Ryan Reed, Tommy Heatherley and Elijah Hicks - and flute quartet -Summer Lake, Sierra Crane, Olivia Sanders and Marissa Caraway.
In March, the jazz band performed at Whiteland Community High School and received a gold rating at a jazz contest. In April, the concert band traveled to Floyd Central High School and received a gold rating for its performance at the ISSMA concert band festival.
