Greene County 4-H Fair Coming Soon

Last updated on Thursday, June 26, 2014

(GREENE CO.) - There’s always plenty to look forward to at the Greene County4-H Fair and this year is no different.

Rick Curl of the Greene County Daily World reports, not only are there the usual staples such as the queen contest, watermelon seed spitting and cow chip throwing contests, and of course a demo derby, it's also a chance for local 4-Hers to show off the hard work they've put in over the course of the last year.

"The 4-Hers work really hard all year to put this on," Greene County 4-H spokesperson Brenda Massette said. "We encourage the folks to come out throughout Greene County to see what the 4-Hers have done and to see their projects.

"They deserve a big hand for all of their hard work and efforts and this is a celebration of those efforts."

The fair, which officially kicks off on Saturday, July 12 and runs through Saturday, July 19, provides a showcase for their projects, which range from cattle and sheep to fashion, photography and rocketry -- and almost anything you can think of in-between.

The event also gives the 4-H program a chance to bring the community together at some special events each year in the outdoor arena -- and this year is certainly no exception.

On opening night there are two events slated for the outdoor arena.

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, the Greene County's Got Talent contest takes place. That will be followed on the same stage at 8 p.m. by singer Karli Edging.

Sunday, July 13 features the always popular Truck and Tractor Pull. It gets underway at 3 p.m. and will feature action in two gas and two diesel pickup truck classes and at least five tractor classes. It will also feature one hot farm class.

The Hog Wrestling and Fun Night takes the spotlight on Thursday, July 17, while the annual demolition derby is set for Saturday, July 19 as the final event of this year's fair.

Tickets prices for all of the showcase events are $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 7 to 12. Kids six and under get in free.
While those are the headline events for this year's fair, there's still plenty of special events to keep fans coming back each night and before the fair officially opens.

This Saturday will mark the first events as the fairgrounds play host to the Tractor Driving Contest in the Northeast field at 9 a.m. with the Dog Show in the Commercial Building at 10 a.m.

The fairgrounds will also host a rifle match on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. in the range on the Southwest corner of the fairgrounds.
On Sunday, July 6, the reigning Miss Greene County, Bethanie Dyar, will relinquish her crown to this year's winner during the queen contest.

It's set to get underway at 2 p.m. in the Community Building and is sponsored in part by Floyd's Flowers.
The younger set isn't going to be left out of this year's pageantry events. There's both a baby contest and Little Mr. and Miss Greene County Contest on tap.

The baby contest, sponsored by Learn A Lot Daycare and Preschool in Jasonville, will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 14.

The Little Mr. and Miss Greene County Pageant is set for the following night, Tuesday, July 15, also at 6 p.m. and is being sponsored by Tiny Tykes Daycare and Preschool in Bloomfield and Scotland.

As a part of both events, the 4-H will also host a meet and greet character night from 5 to 9 p.m.

On Monday, the younger set can mingle with Tigger and Dora the Explorer. On Tuesday, Dora makes a return visit with Sponge Bob Square Pants along side.

The meet and greets as well as both contests will take place in the Community Building.

There will be a cat show on Tuesday, July 8 in the Community Building and a public Fashion Revue on Wednesday, July 9 beginning at 7 p.m.

The fashion revue will also take place in the community building.

Auto enthusiasts will enjoy the car show set for opening day. There will be awards handed out for Best Interior, Best Paint Job, Oldest Car, Queen's Choice, Traveled the Farthest and Best of Show.

"This will be our third year doing that," Massette said. "We had more last year than the first year, so we're hoping to see an even larger amount of entries this year."

Entries are welcome from anywhere and anyone with fees of $10 for each car. All proceeds go to 4-H.

Check-in will begin at 4 p.m. with the show officially getting underway at 5 p.m.

Music fans will also have a second chance to be entertained. It comes on Wednesday, July 16 when Mansions in Heaven Church and Pleasant Kentucky Ridge Baptist Church sponsor Threads of Grace, featuring Bret Raper on the fiddle and the group High Sierra at 6 p.m. in the Commercial Building.

Entry forms for all of the events -- including the Hog Wrestling, Baby Contest and Little Mr. and Miss Greene County -- are available by visiting the Greene County Extension Office or from the Greene County Daily World website www.gcdailyworld.com. Also included on the website and at the extension office are rules and guidelines for all of the events with the exception of the demo derby.

Forms for that will be available over the next few days.

In addition to the traditional fare of goats, sheep, cattle, rabbits and chickens fair-goers can get personal with some more exotic creatures thanks to Silly Safari.

On Monday, July 14 Silly Safari will bring some education and interaction with live animals to the fair.
According to a 4-H release, they are the leading provider of live animal conservation education in Indiana and provide over 3,000 conservation inspiring live animal shows every year throughout the United States.

Their mission is to create positive human-animal interactions that inspire responsible pet ownership and wild animal conservation.

The event is slated for a 7 p.m. start in the Conservation Building.

With all of the activities available to both 4-H members and the community itself, there's also a way for individuals and businesses to show their support.

Massette said 4-H is always looking for sponsors.

"If you are an individual or a business that would like to donate toward these events or toward a plaque for the 4-Hers that are champions in their projects, we would welcome their support," Massette said. "They can get in touch with me for more information."

Massette can be reached by phone at (812) 384-5118 or by her email addresslmassette@bluemarble.net.
