Jasonville Man Arrested After Driving Drunk With Children In Vehicle

Last updated on Wednesday, June 4, 2014

(JASONVILLE) - A warrant was issued last week for the arrest of a Jasonville man accused of driving drunk at a high rate of speed, doing “doughnuts” then almost hitting another vehicle before crashing into a ditch on a county road, all with four children in the vehicle.

The Greene County Daily World reports that Fields then fled the scene leaving four children ages 7 to 15 with emergency personnel.

Police arrested 36-year-old Christopher Fields Sunday. He is facing felony charges of resisting law enforcement, four counts of neglect of a dependent putting the dependent in a situation endangering the dependent's life/health and a misdemeanor charge of failure to stop after an accident resulting in non-vehicle damage.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Davis Aerne was the investigating officer who was dispatched to the scene of the crash around 10 p.m. on April 26 where a red 1977 Ford F150 pickup truck was in the ditch at the intersection of County Road 1350 West and CR 700 North.

The truck, driven by Fields, was northbound on CR 1350W, had skidded through a stop sign, through the intersection, and on into the ditch.

Four children were on the scene along with emergency medical personnel and Fields. But Fields allegedly took off running to his truck as the officer was running a check on the man's identification.

Aerne took off running after Fields and reported Fields got into his truck, backed it out of the ditch and took off down the road failing to heed the officer's commands to stop.

Aerne and a couple of other officers located the truck, abandoned not far from the scene on CR 700 N. Footprints indicated Fields had headed toward Midland on foot.

The children, ages 7-15, were interviewed and Aerne reported they thought Fields was drunk, they were scared to ride with him, and had asked him to stop and let them out but he refused. They said he almost hit another vehicle on a highway, almost hit a pole, was doing "doughnuts," had driven 80-100 miles per hour, and was drinking beer while driving.

Following the investigation, a criminal case was filed against Fields in Greene Circuit Court on May 27 and a warrant issued for his arrest.
