(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Board of Works Monday accepted a bid, pending review, to build a sidewalk and add L.E.D. Streetlights along John Williams Boulevard.
Street Commissioner Dan Kirk says Duke Energy will install the lights and this will be the first time the city has used digital lighting saving the city on the electric bill.
The sidewalk, which will be built mostly on the north side of John Williams Boulevard, will be six feet wide, instead of the normal 4 feet.
The city received two bids for the sidewalk project - from Milestone Construction and Tri-County Builders.
Milestone had the winning bid of $873,575. Tri-County's bid was for $947,000. Kirk says the project will be paid for with $645,000 from Bedford Redevelopment Commission Tax Increment Financing District. The rest of the money will come from the motor vehicle highway budget.
Mayor Shawna Girgis says the sidewalks are being built because of safety concern. She added more pedestrians are using John Williams Boulevard to walk to Wal-Mart and other stores.
Construction will begin next month and be completed by November 3.
