(CAMPBELLBURG) - Melvin Smith was 16-years-old when he dropped out of high school to join the Army.
When the 20th Annual All-American Country Hoedown parade gets underway Sunday afternoon, Smith will be leading it off as grand marshal.
Now 87, Smith is a member of the Greatest Generation, a term used to describe men and women who lived during that era, many of them serving in World War II.
After his discharge from the Army, Smith worked for the railroad for 20 years and then for a quarter century at West Washington Schools, in maintenance, cook and bus driver.
Now he spends his days gardening, hunting and fishing.
