(SHOALS) - Skyler Veilleux, who lead the Shoals Jug Rox in nearly every category in baseball, was awarded a full-scholarship to play at Lake Land College.
A number of schools were interested in his talents on the diamond, including Vincennes University, but Lake Land College in Mattoon, Il was Veilleux's ultimate choice.
Veilleux thanked his high school coach, Tim Sorrells, and his summer league coach, Jeff Truelove, for helping him reach his goal at playing on a college team. He plans to study business management.
Veilleux, who throws right handed and bats left handed, took home team awards at Shoals for ERA, stolen bases, RBIs (tied), batting average and on-base percentage and is believed to be a shoo-in for the All-Blue Chip Conference squad.
He finished the season with a .469 batting average and an on base percentage of .550. Veilleux tallied four triples, four doubles, a home run and 15 stolen bases for the Jug Rox.
On the mound, he went 3-4 this season with 101 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings. Lake Land coach Bill Jackson says it was Veilleux's arm and breaking balls that caught his eye. Veilleux is expected to play right away for the Lakers.
