(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan has proclaimed July 26, 2014, “Americans with Disabilities Act Anniversary Day” in Bloomington.
The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) will observe the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with a Mayoral proclamation and a media release event at noon on Friday, July 25, in the atrium at City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street.
At the event, a proclamation will be read and representatives of local businesses which have been determined to be ADA "AccessAble" will be honored. The businesses were surveyed by volunteers in the city's Council for Community Accessibility and awarded "AccessAbility" decals. The decal program was established in 1993 to recognize local businesses that are accessible to persons with disabilities. Since the inception of the program, 143 local businesses that met accessibility criteria have received decals to display in their windows or on their doors.
In addition to some CCA members who serve as volunteer surveyors, Indiana University and Ivy Tech Community College students have surveyed businesses after training by the CCA, giving students hands-on experience while educating the public about the needs of people with disabilities and requirements of the ADA. After the July 25 event, Ivy Tech Community College students of Dr. Lisa Connolly will survey the new YMCA.
