(WASHINGTON) - The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department says the Director of Camp Illiana died Monday morning when a limb fell on him while he was helping cut down a tree at the camp.
60-year-old David Ira-Mitchel Bean was pronounced dead at the scene by Daviess County Coroner Laura Petty.
Camp Illiana is a Christian Youth Camp located about four miles south of Washington.
According to police Bean and camp staff member, 20-year-old Cody Chapman of Vincennes were removing a large, tall, dead tree at the base of a hill located near the water slide. Authorities say the men had completed cutting the tree at its base and were attempting to pull it down. Chapman was operating a Kubota tractor with a rope tied to the front loader that was attached to the tree. Bean was standing near the base of the tree. Officials say that as the front end loader began to pull on the tree, the rope broke causing the tree to sway. At that time, a large limb fell from the top of the tree and struck Bean in the head.
Camp staff called 911 and began first aid and CPR but were unable to save Bean.
No campers or other staff were injured.
Campers were taking part in classes indoors on the other side of the campground at the time.
