(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department firefighters were able to extinguish a blaze quickly that started in the garage at the Quality Inn at 911 Constitution Avenue.
According to Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner, the department was alerted to the blaze at 3:45 p.m. after the smoke detectors in the garage area sounded alerting the employee at the front desk, who then called a Bedford Police officer, who then alerted the fire department.
The Inn is owned by Kulwinder Kaur of Sacramento, California.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was bellowing out of the garage area. Firefighters entered the garage through the southeast door and knocked down the blaze.
"They then entered through the overhead door and put out the rest of the fire," Wagner says. "The fire is still under investigation, but we are pretty sure it started at a riding lawn mower that was just pulled into the garage."
After the fire was out, firefighters ventilated the area of smoke and checked the attic area above the garage to make sure the fire had not spread.
"There was also smoke in old kitchen and conference room area on the south side of the building," Wagner says. "They are not using that area. Our fire investigator and fire inspector will be back on the scene this morning to take another look at things.
While fighting that fire, the department received another call about a possible fire at Stone Cutters Coffee Shop.
"That fire didn't end up being anything, thank goodness," Wagner added.
