Last updated on Wednesday, July 30, 2014

(BEDFORD) - A Heltonville man was arrested late Monday night on heroin charges after he fled from the scene of a property damage accident at Fifth and J street.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, witnesses who saw the crash reported seeing a dark-colored pickup truck crash into a utility pole and then flee the scene.

Officers located the purple pickup truck with 36-year-old Clinton Ryan of Heltonville inside at the intersection of Fourth and J streets.

"They asked Mr. Ryan if he had been involved in an accident," Parsley reported. "He said yes and said he was on his way home and was going to call police to report the accident."

Ryan got out of the pickup truck and was asked to produce his driver's license.

"When he pulled his hand out of his pocket a glass smoking device filled with a white powdery substance fell to the ground and shattered," Parsley added.

While officers were talking to Ryan, the door to the truck was open and officer saw a handgun on the seat along with another smoking device.

Officers were then given consent to search the truck and found another gun in the console and a metal container that contained "powder and rocks" that field-tested positive for heroin.

They also found the remains of burnt cigarettes, which field-tested positive for marijuana.

Ryan was charged with possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana, possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to deal, possession of drug paraphernalia and leaving the scene of a property damage accident

Parsley says no firearm charges were filed against Ryan.
