(DAVIESS CO.) - Children playing on a sandbar on the West Fork of the White River found a human skull Sunday night.
According to Daviess County authorities, the children brought the skull to their grandparents and they called police who went to a home in the 1500 block of North River Road around 9 p.m.
The sheriff's department and the Daviess County Coroner's Office have both began an investigation.
Sheriff Jerry Harbstreit says it is the top portion of the skull and appears to be very old.
"We have reached out to other organizations for assistance on the case," Harbstreit says. "The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers and the Indiana University Anthropology Department is assisting."
Harbstreit says he doesn't believe this is a criminal case, but believes the skull may have come from a very old grave, possibly one involving Native Americans.
"We'll know more after the experts make their determinations," he added.
