Lawrence County Receives Grant Money To Combat Substance Abuse

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County has received a grant for $175,000 from the Indiana Judicial Center to help courts with substance abuse problems.

Superior Court II Judge William Sleva told the county council the money is intended for drug and alcohol programs and problem-solving courts, like drug court that Sleva oversees.

Sleva says Lawrence County was one of 12 counties chosen to receive a share of the $2 million grant from the Indiana Legislature.

The county has already received about $30,000 so far.

For 2015, the grant money will be built into the county budget.

Sleva asked permission to spend:

$11,473 to hire a part-time probation officer. The officer help do drug and alcohol screenings for the ADAPT program, monitor compliance and take care of other details.
$10,000 to cover the costs of individual counseling and evaluations for people who cannot pay the fees at Centerstone or other facilities. The facility charges lower rates, but has few scholarships available for indigents, which means they are not getting the treatment because they can't afford it.
$5,745 to help pay the salary of Jim Crane, case manager for Pathways. Crain counsels inmates who have drug or alcohol problems.
$2,652 to hire a facilitator who will do "interactive journaling" with drug court participants.

The council voted unanimously to approve the appropriations.
