(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell City Council voted to accept a loan bid from German American for the moving of the police station from the former First National Bank building back to city hall and to put a new roof on the building.
The Times Mail reports that the city expects to spend, at the high end, about $400,000 converting 1,364 square feet of garage space on the south side of City Hall into police department. The city decided to move the police station because of dilapidated, water and mold issues in the former bank building.
The money also will be used to put a new 8,275-square-foot roof on City Hall and purchase and install a back-up generator to power the police department in the event of an electrical outage.
The work will include taking the roof air-conditioning units off the building to help alleviate stress on the building. The price also includes moving expenses
The city received four bids from local financial institutions to finance the project. German American offered the lowest interest rate at 4 percent.
The term of the loan will be 10 years, or 120 months. Clerk-treasurer George James suggested the loan be paid on a monthly basis.
After the council chose the lowest bid, members then passed a resolution providing for an additional appropriation once the loan process is complete. James explained the additional appropriation was needed to allow the city to spend the money and would first have to be approved by the Department of Local Government Finance.
Construction bids for the project were accepted Tuesday at the city board of works meeting and the final bid will be awarded during a special board of works meeting at 4 p.m. on July 15 at City Hall.
City officials remain undecided on the fate of the current building that houses the police department. Demolition costs are included in the current estimate, but instead of demolishing the building, the city may sell the building if an interested buyer comes forward.
