(DAVIESS CO.) - Phase 1 of the expansion project on Odon-Cannelburg Road should be completed this week.
Daviess County Highway engineer Jason Heile says most of the pavement is down, but there remains a little asphalt work, some placement of rumble strips and some striping left to do.
The Odon-Cannelburg Road was the first phase of a project to widen the road adding buggy lanes on each side and wider shoulders.
Officials say the idea is to make the busy roadway through the heart of the Daviess County Amish country safer.
Getting to some of the final work has been a challenge because of several odd and dangerous events.
One man drove into some wet concrete a few weeks ago, causing crews to have to redo more than 200 feet of concrete work.
Then last week someone stole a truck from the work site.
Officials say that one of their biggest concerns is the speed and amount of traffic running through the final construction area, which is closed except to local traffic.
While the bulk of phase one of the Odon-Cannelburg Road project is expected to be finished this week, crews will still be working in the area for awhile finishing up things like sowing grass.
Daviess County officials are planning on holding some education classes for people who will use the road. The county plans to hold some instructional sessions on Aug. 9 and Aug. 23.
The classes are geared toward the Amish community to help show them the safest way to use the buggy lanes.
Now the county is gearing up to begin Phase 2 that will run from County Road 550 North to just county to just beyond County Road 850 North. The county has begun purchasing easements and right of way along the road.
