(BEDFORD) - The remaining rabbit that was stolen from the Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds Saturday night is now safe at home with its owner.
One rabbit, Charley, was recovered in Mitchell Sunday night after a woman reported seeing two rabbits on Warren Street
The other rabbit, belonging to Deanna Caswell's daughter 9-year-old Natasha of Springville, was returned late Monday night.
"We received a call around 10:30 to 11 p.m. from the sheriff's department saying they had found our rabbit and we could come and get it," Deanna says.
Leo, was returned safe and sound and Natasha is happy to have her bunny back.
"She (Natasha) wouldn't eat and cried and cried," Deanna says. "We searched all up and down Warren and Main streets and posted fliers hoping someone would see the rabbit and call. But we had no luck. Natasha was heartbroken."
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, police suspect a group of people took the animals from the rabbit and poultry barn.
"We were in the barn when the rabbits were taken," Deanna says. "It happened so fast and they ran out the back of the barn toward the swine barn and were gone."
Deanna says she believes it was a group of kids that had attempted to win a live rabbit at one of the carnival games.
"We were told the kids were even stealing the ping pong balls from the goldfish game attempting to win a rabbit and they couldn't so I guess they just decided they would steal one," Deanna added. "We are just glad Leo is home and safe."
The incident is still under investigation and it is unclear if criminal charges will be filed.
